Company background:
Urban Automotive was established in September 2013. Since then, the company has experienced rapid growth as they provide a unique niche in the automotive industry, specialising in the design and modification of luxurious vehicles. As a business, Urban Automotive wants to allow its customers the opportunity to purchase a car or make modifications to their existing vehicle with enough flexibility to gain the result of individuality.
The idea:
The concept of the Urban project was to support the team by reducing their production time and improving the way in which their composite parts are produced. This was done by removing the process of hand-cut components and replacing them with pre-cut kits.
The process/solution:
Cristex works alongside Urban Automotive to convert their sample templates for manual prepreg cutting into digital files for a range of high-spec vehicles such as the Range Rover Sport 2018 and the Land Rover Discovery, to name a few. These digital files are processed into kits with optimum material usage through the utilisation of powerful nesting software. This accelerates the production process and enables Cristex to supply Urban with the volume they require in a time-sensitive manner.
The benefits:
- Aesthetic surface finish
- Maximum strength properties
- Reduced layup time
- Equal resin distribution
The result:
Urban Automotive is able to offer high-spec vehicles with top-of-the-range modifications. The replacement of exterior elements of their vehicles with carbon fibre components provides a reduction in weight, whilst giving the vehicles a distinctive aesthetic finish. By removing the process of hand-cut components and replacing them with pre-cut kits, Cristex’s Kit Cutting facilities have optimised material yield to an impressive 80%.
