Woven Unidirectional Fabrics

Woven unidirectional (UD) fabrics are engineered composite reinforcements where the majority of fibres are aligned in a single direction, typically 0° or 90°, with a small secondary fibre used to stabilise the structure during handling and processing.

By maximising fibre alignment within the primary load direction, woven UD fabrics deliver high directional stiffness and tensile strength while maintaining excellent laminate efficiency. Compared to traditional woven fabrics, unidirectional reinforcements reduce fibre crimp, helping improve structural performance and reduce unnecessary weight within the laminate.

These materials are widely used in structural composite applications where directional loading and weight optimisation are critical.

Key Benefits

  • High strength and stiffness in the primary load direction

  • Improved laminate efficiency through reduced fibre crimp

  • Excellent structural performance-to-weight ratio

  • Good handling and processing stability

  • Available in carbon, glass and aramid fibre constructions

  • Suitable for infusion, RTM and prepreg applications

  • High areal weights available for demanding structural laminates

Product Range

Cristex supplies a range of woven unidirectional fabrics in carbon and glass fibre constructions.

Available formats include:

• Standard woven UD fabrics
• Thermofixed woven UD fabrics

Typical weight ranges include:
• Carbon fibre: 160 g/m² – 1200 g/m²
• Glass fibre: 223 g/m² – 1600 g/m²

These materials are available in a range of fibre architectures and widths to support structural  composite manufacturing requirements.
